The problem is, while I love the taste and the warmth of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, I don’t always love the caffeine.

Switching my daily cup of coffee to a decaffeinated blend still has the great taste and I actually notice a difference in how I feel.

Why Drink Decaf Coffee?

Well, I decided to make the change from regular coffee to decaf simply because of the caffeine. I can be sensitive to caffeine and I knew I couldn’t give up drinking coffee each and every day. So I thought I would give decaf a try. Little did I know that it would be just what the doctor ordered!  

According to Authority Nutrition, decaf coffee is not completely free from caffeine, but it has had 97% of the caffeine removed from the beans before brewing. This slight dosage of caffeine is so small, I barely notice it.

If you are like me and you are sensitive to caffeine, you can avoid the caffeine overload simply by switching to decaf coffee.

How Is Decaf Coffee Made?

Decaf coffee is not as complex as you might think. There are a variety of methods used to create decaf coffee, but they are all basically the same. 

 
First, the green coffee beans are soaked in hot water and some type of solvent to extract the caffeine. After this first batch, the beans will lose most of their flavor and are often thrown out. Yet, for all the subsequent batches- after the first one- they will retain their flavor. This is what gives decaf coffee the mild, non-bitter taste.

If you don’t like the bitterness of regular coffee, decaf could be just the thing for you- since you won’t have to compromise on great flavor.

  1. Sammi, Amen! Caffeine does affect a lot of people. I know a lot of people that mix their caffeinated coffee with their decaf. Once concern that caffeinated coffee drinkers have is that if they drink over 300mg of caffeine a day, (about 3 cups) then their coffee becomes a diuretic (dehydrating). With decaf, that’s not an issue at all.

    You mentioned smooth decaf. By smooth, I think you mean (not bitter or burnt). The best way to find smooth decaf is to search the internet for “smooth coffee” or “smooth coffee beans”. There are a number very good options there.

  3. I like decaf coffee.I brew mine is there a difference if you grind it yourself?.Can you still drink 4 cups and still not get the jitters?

    • Hi Rhonda! I think they flavor is better if you grind the beans yourself right before you brew. However, I mainly drink decaf K-cups and those are not freshly ground. πŸ˜‰ I am guessing I would still get the jitters if I drank 4 cups. I have yet to do that. Ha! Usually 1-2 is perfect for me. Happy brewing!

  4. Hi Sammie, which decaf coffee you suggest to buy? I love k cups and I thing that there are less caffeine in k cups than in regular coffee. Can you suggest me what to try? I now drink Green Mountain ant it is good but I want to try another k cups

    • Hi! I use the Green Mountain decaf k-cups too. You may want to try a local coffee company as I really enjoy some of the local roasted decaf varieties in our area. In that case, I use my reusable kcup!

  5. Hi Sammi and Sarah, Great post with great information! I personally have had to use decaf because I have a rapid heartbeat and caffeine can speed it up even more! Women also need to be aware that if they have fibrocystic breast disease they need to avoid caffeine. Thanks for the info! Blessings, Janet
