How do we get DONE what needs to be DONE each and every day, all while maintaining some form of sanity? How do we find time to get it all done and still be an attentive wife, mother, and friend? Something has to give!!!!

I think that the mistake most moms make, is they decide to back off on cleaning and controlling the clutter.

It seems the obvious choice: prioritize your work or family over common household tasks. It is noble, I won’t deny it. But I still believe it is a mistake, and here is why:

Clutter INCREASES stress and DECREASES productivity!

By choosing to live in a cluttered space, surrounded by unfinished tasks, you are choosing to limit your ability to GET STUFF DONE!

By consistently making it a priority to DE-CLUTTER your space (which will also DE-CLUTTER your mind), you will discover that you are capable of accomplishing much more than you ever thought possible.

You will feel better about yourself, and you will have more time and energy to put towards your work and family.

It is my personal belief that our home is a reflection of our heart. When my home is disorganized and cluttered, my heart feels the same way.

When my home is neat and tidy, my heart feels cleansed and ready to tackle the day! This is why I strive to prioritize my household cleaning and organizing tasks above the rest of my to-do-list.

I have found that I can create a clean and un-cluttered environment for myself in less than 30 minutes, no matter WHAT CONDITION MY HOUSE IS IN! Sound too good to be true? Well it’s not!!

CLUTTER increases STRESS & decreases PRODUCTIVITY! You need this Simple 3-Step Plan to quickly de-clutter, de-stress, & get stuff done! I can finally think straight when the house is picked up and organized! https://happihomemade.com/clutter-stress-get-stuff-done/

Follow these 3 steps, and you will be amazed at how quickly you can De-Clutter, De-Stress, & Get Stuff Done!

Step 1: KITCHEN KLEAN-UP (5 minutes)

If you are anything like me, you spend a lot of time in the kitchen (and it can get messy FAST).   Go through your kitchen space and put all food items away while placing all dirty dishes in the sink or dishwasher.

Quickly wipe up the countertops. Your kitchen will not be clean, but it is amazing how much you can de-clutter and tidy it up in 5 minutes.

Step 2: EVERYTHING IN IT’S PLACE (10 minutes)

Go through your main living space and pick up everything that does not belong there. Toss (or place) it in the correct room of the house. I always have a laundry basket set at the top of my stairs and I place everything that belongs in the basement in that to avoid multiple trips downstairs. In less than 10 minutes, your main living space should be DE-CLUTTERED and the rest of your house will look like a tornado swept through it….don’t stop now!

Step 3: ROOM BY ROOM (15 minutes)

Now, go through each room of your house and tidy it up. DO NOT actually clean these rooms! Your focus is on de-cluttering and making the rooms appear cleaner.

Pick up dirty laundry, arrange mail in a tidy pile, make beds, and straighten things up. Keep moving, and try not to spend more than 3 minutes in each room.

As an example, I will share what I do with my kid’s mess of a room on a daily basis.

I place a laundry basket in the middle of the room (or I just make a pile), and work my way around the room putting all the β€œstuff” that needs to be put away in the laundry basket. This way the room looks clean to me, but it is still my kid’s job to β€œClean the Spot” in the middle of the room when they get home from school. I can generally accomplish this task in less than 3 minutes if I do it each and every day.

If you do this 30 minute ritual at the beginning of the day, you will find that your mind is clear and your heart is ready to GET STUFF DONE!

I find that there are days where I must repeat this process 2 or 3 times throughout the day, especially when my kids are home all day! But there is a soothing rhythm to it. I am always amazed at how much of an impact this quick DE-CLUTTER can have on my heart and my home. Sure, the laundry still needs to be folded & the dishes still need to be washed….but your home just feels more peaceful and put-together! It sure has helped me!

What do you think?  Is it appropriate to prioritize tidying up your home over other motherly tasks?  Does it make you a better mom or does it distract you from more important things?

  1. I just did your 30 minute routine. It worked!

One of the things that causes me stress is MESS and the TIME it takes out of my life. I know everyone says don’t worry about it, more important things in life; but it annoys me. I enjoyed your post and when people actually admit, yes it’s a problem, But here’s a solution. Thank you!

    • Megan, I am so excited to hear that. Thank you for taking the time to comment! I still do this routine religiously every night and it is such a sanity saver for me. I think we are all wired a bit differently. If my space is disorganized, my heart and head are disorganized too. So I’ve simply got to make it a priority without allowing myself to become obsessed by it (if that makes sense). If you have kids, you should definitely watch this vlog on how I control the mess in my girl’s room: https://happihomemade.com/vlog-clean-spot/

  2. These are great tips for de-cluttering your space. I don’t think it’s about prioritizing tidying up your home over other motherly tasks, I think it’s about making tidying up your home a priority period. If it means waking up thirty minutes earlier to get the task done, then you do it.

  3. I agree, you do get much more done in a clutter-free environment! Your 30 minute de-clutter plan is excellent and a great way to stay on top of things. Thank you for sharing this post with us at the Hearth and Soul hop. Pinning and will tweet πŸ™‚

  4. Sarah, I just came over from your link at April’s blog hop. Glad I found you! I so agree with you. I feel so much more energetic and productive when I start off with everything tidy.

  5. I find myself doing these steps throughout the day… if I don’t the house is a disaster by the end of the day! It is always nice on top of putting everything in its place is, deciding to put things in the give away pile. Always a refreshing feeling. (o:

    • I usually do this several times throughout the day too! If the house gets too messy, I just can’t function. Plus, if you stay on top of it, it doesn’t seem so bad by the end of the day πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by Aspen!

  6. So true and what a great way to start the new year with decluttering!

  7. Yes – increased stress for me! I like these doable steps.

  8. A blog post after my own heart! Love this: “Clutter INCREASES stress and DECREASES productivity!”. This is great!
